Alan Snape
Artist's profile
Ceramics: coastal pots - seabirds - figures - ancient stories.
Biography
Born in Rochdale 1948. Studied art at St. Martins College Lancaster 1967 - 1970. Head of art at Penketh High School Warrington from 1976 until 1987. Now a full-time potter with studio and gallery at The Potters House, producing ceramic sculptures combining both thrown and hand-built techniques.
Artistic inspirations
I've always used art as a vehicle to express my creativity. As a student I drew a lot of inspiration from the work of Henry Moore and more recently the Italian artist Giacometti. A visit to the museum at Heraklion in Crete was another turning point, making me more aware of the interaction between shape and décor.
The concepts in my ceramics are inspired by the constancy yet fluency of the sea, and in particular the east coast and Suffolk, by ancient stories and by the human figure.
Exhibitions
